Certificate in Waste Stabilisation Ponds (Micro Credential)

Waste Stabilisation Ponds remain the most common form of wastewater treatment in New Zealand. However, entry-level training for operators of Waste Stabilisation Ponds ended with significant changes to New Zealand Wastewater qualifications in 2019. WSP has recognised the need for qualification-based training by developing the new Certificate in Waste Stabilisation Ponds (Micro-credential), Level 3, 20 credits.

Description

The NZQA micro credential qualification has been designed for Waste Stabilisation Pond operators. and with curriculum and course resources using industry guidelines and practical training material sourced working closely with the Kapiti Coast District Council Wastewater Operations Team for practical content and monitoring information. 

 Topics include:

  • Sources, characteristics, preliminary, primary, and biological treatment processes
  • Tertiary/advanced pond treatment processes
  • Operations, maintenance, and troubleshooting
  • Pond improvements and upgrades
  • Lagoon systems – anaerobic and aerated processes
  • Desludging
  • Effluent disposal
  • Industrial-sourced wastewater treatment processes
  • Sampling, testing, monitoring, and compliance with consents
  • Health and safety
  • Field trip

Assessment information

The course programme is completed over 16 weeks with pre-course requirements, a 5-day block course, post-course applications at work assessments and portfolio of evidence collected on each learners Waste Stabilisation Pond.
