Wastewater Treatment using Ponds and Lagoons
Waste Stabilisation Ponds (WSP’s) (previously called Oxidation Ponds) and Lagoons are the most common form of wastewater treatment in New Zealand. This 4 Day course introduces you to the pond and lagoon treatment process including practical design, operations, maintenance and troubleshooting. It includes sessions on advanced pond design, desludging, and land disposal options.

Topics include:
- Introduction to the characteristics of wastewater
- Process and practical design of WSPs – anaerobic, facultative, maturation
- Process and practical design of lagoons - anaerobic, partly and fully mixed
- Operations including maintenance, monitoring, troubleshooting
- Introduction to advanced pond upgrades
- Desludging
- Effluent disposal to land
- Testing and sampling equipment familiarisation
- A full day of site visits
On successful completion you will be awarded a micro credential in pond operations on the NZQA framework and gain practical experience through visiting pond systems and handling instrumentation.
Who should attend
This course is tailored towards the operator, asset manager and compliance officer. No previous experience with ponds is necessary.
